Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

This was my second stay in Southampton and I have enjoyed it both times. There is plenty to see with the museums and galleries. The food options are very good with lots of restaurants and bars to choose from. I really liked all the parks and open spaces. Taxis are easy to get and you can also pre book which is what we did to get back and forth to the cruise terminal. We traveled in and out of Southampton airport and it is a great airport as it is small and friendly and probably nicest airport experience I have ever had.

The Pub across the road does not serve food.
The Pub across the road does not serve food. There are several places to eat roughly 1 mile away, a 15 minute walk. The Mayflower Village Pub served excellent meals and drinks. Ristorante Italiano also served very good Italian food. There is a Subway close by that is open for breakfast. We Ubered from the bus station and to the cruise terminal.

We went to Southampton to go to the Mayflower theatre which is good value compared to London theatres. It has lots of shows and good facilities. We will go back. We also had a good dinner at Papillon which is opposite the theatre. We stayed at the Ibis which is good value and well located for the Mayflower.
The relaxed atmosphere of the hotel immediately left us feeling very comfortable. The staff made us feel very welcome and were extremely helpful and polite at all times. We were in Southampton to visit the Christmas market and The Star was within a few minutes walk of the city centre which was a huge bonus. Of course the price of the room including breakfast was incredibly competitive especially important to us who were on a tight budget.
This is the second time we have stayed in this hotel prior to cruising the next day. Location is perfect for town centre and cruise terminals. Our room had a little balcony which suited our needs and we had a great view of our ship early the next morning. The room was spotless and spacious. The breakfast choice was varied and plentiful. All the staff are so friendly and pleasant. Would definitely stay here again.
A charming traditional Edwardian hotel. Very clean and in a good location in Southampton. The bathroom was roomy and had updated fixtures.the hotel is a short taxi ride to both the train station and cruise port and a short bus ride to Westquay shopping centre. The traditional English breakfast was very good as was the food in the on-site pub/ bar.
Great location. I stayed here for a cruise departure the next morning. Hotel is a very quick walk from the train station - and the cruise terminal was a cheap taxi journey.
Room was a decent size. Convenient refrigerator in room. Separate bathroom and toilet room will be a benefit for some.
Staff were friendly when I arrived.
The hotel was situated in a good location and we were able to walk to restaurants, shopping and even a launderette. The host was very helpful in assisting us with amenities and places to go. The room was large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. Will definitely stay again when we return to Southampton.
We stayed at this hotel for only one night but I will definitely be making it one of my favourite place's to stay when near Southampton the food/staff atmosphere cleanliness everything about this hotel was excellent and the young girl who helped me when I arrived was so helpful and polite 5☆☆☆☆☆
The hotel is very tired , threadbare sofas in the foyer, dirty dinning chairs everyone stained not what you Want to sit on in expensive clothes.
Very chipped and worn furniture in rooms...Very comfy beds. Evening meal basic, The breakfast was terrible and very poorly organized.
Amazing hotel with a great concept. Large room with excellent facilities. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Great location for the port and cruise ship holidays, walking distance to all terminals.
Set in the old town of Southampton, with lots of great restaurants.
It was an excellent experience to stay at Ennios Boutique Hotel! If I come to Southampton again I will stay again at the same place. Lovely staff, wonderful meals in the restaurant, clean room and very friendly atmosphere! Highly enjoyed my stay there!
Amazing
The hotel room was fine, clean, comfortable, lovely shower room, and you could control the heating temperature. the position was good with easy access off M271 and a straightforward run in to Southampton and Cruise Terminal.
What I liked about the property is that it’s a cheap hotel in a good location, with easy access to the city centre and shopping area. Very convenient location within just a few minutes drive to Paultons Park.
I liked where the Moxy is located, close to the bus station and a minute walk to the mall. Free WIFI and very comfortable room, serviced everyday. I will definitely visit the Moxy Southampton in the future.
The rooms in this historic hotel had all the modern conveniences while keeping the Old World charm. The breakfast was great. We had fun in the evening in the hotel's bar with the very engaging staff.
Pleasantly surprised after my visit to the Holiday Inn in Southampton City. The property was clean, the room was comfortable and breakfast was lovely and fresh. Good price too.
Location is a short walk from Westquay or Southampton high street, Room also has a smart tv which is a bonus. All round good place to go for a short break.
