Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

We went to Southampton to go to the Mayflower theatre which is good value compared to London theatres. It has lots of shows and good facilities. We will go back. We also had a good dinner at Papillon which is opposite the theatre. We stayed at the Ibis which is good value and well located for the Mayflower.

If visiting Southampton stay closer to city centre. This hotel was practically surrounded by a building site. Drink were extortionate, limited food available not as described on website. Saving grace lovely reasonable pub/restaurant within a few minutes walk.

We stayed in 003.
We stayed in 003. Very spacious but this is what facilities I should have had.
The spacious family room features a tea and coffee maker and a seating area, as well as a private bathroom boasting a bath. The well-equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, kitchenware, a microwave and a toaster. This family room features a sofa, heating and a flat-screen TV. The unit has 2 beds.
All we got was the tea & coffee making facilities. Table in there but nothing else.
Rooms spacious but found lounge & beds very uncomfortable. Thankfully only stayed the one night.
Quiet & grounds lovely.

The town centre has loads of shops and a large indoor shopping centre. There are several parks and lots of green space available. There was a huge choice of cafes, restaurants and pubs for all price brackets. We went to the 1865 club which holds lots of musical events. We were a bit concerned doing the 30 minute walk through the parks when the event finnished, however we saw at least 3 separate groups of police walking around the town and parks so felt very safe.
Really enjoyed our two night stay. The room was comfortable, clean and well appointed.
Breakfast was included in the price and the choice of food was very good.
The hotel is very close to the Westquay Centre where there is a great choice of shops and restaurants.
The hotel is close to the Cruise Terminal. While the Cruise Terminal may look close I suggest you take a taxi which the Hotel Concierge arranged for us.
When we next cruise out of Southampton The Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour will definitely be our hotel of choice.
Highly recommend The Lighthouse. 5⭐
Great easy check in.
Very clean, bright and comfortable accommodation.
Lovely welcome basket of bread, cereals . Fridge had milk, wine and beer . Lovely touch 😊
Excellent location for what we needed and very quiet
Excellent communication with owners from booking. We had a minor issue in the accommodation and it was dealt with on the same day by Ian. Thank you
We will be returning next time we are visiting our son. So much better than hotels we have stayed in in Southampton
Wonderful apartment right off High Street - we loved our king bed with a nice view towards Town Quay Park, and our own private bathroom off the hall, across the room. Great location, walkable around the old city with its interesting past, its many still-intact walls, and Titanic history. Joe was very personable, and we enjoyed some interesting chats together. We appreciated the morning coffee, cereal and toast before starting our day. Would definitely stay again at Joe's place if we are ever back in Southampton!
Staff were wonderful. Rooms had just been refurbished/upgraded and were fresh and clean. The property has its own character, more like a BnB, less of a hotel feel. Also the hotel is in a pretty location in Southampton, close to some parks that are suitable for walking. We noticed many dogs being walked in the area while we were there. Good food for breakfasts and dinners. The hotel restaurant has a regular clientele from the neighborhood, which gives it a home-y feel.
Location: Easy to get into Southampton by bus but coming home late a night & taxis aren't too keen to take you that distance out of the city
Hotel: nice hotel; really helpful staff;
Gym/Spa/Sauna/Steam/Hot tub: lovely to have on site; busy as these facilities are also open to external members of the club
Room: very cosy! comfy bed Seethru glass door to the bathroom!!!!
Restaurant: busy (open to the public) service was excellent & the food very good
Superb location for Southampton town centre and our visit to the Mayflower theatre. Everything is within walking distance. This hotel has an incredible breakfast selection to set you up for your day and the indoor pool and sauna was a wonderful treat. All the staff we spoke to were welcoming, professional and kind. We liked the added security touches on the foyer doors and our room was great.
Good cleaning standards, location is brilliant and very friendly and helpful staff. Fresh towels were provided and bathrooms were very good. Parking in Southampton is expensive but parking on hotel site was cheaper than the rest and was very convenient. Reception and restaurant staff was very helpful, friendly and helpful.
Location useful for the university/Portswood highstreet. Member of staff on reception during the evening really helpful in sorting out some issues we had with bedding and the sofa bed. It was much cheaper than other hotels closer to town.
Dinner and breakfast was amazing, I am coeliac so needed gluten free and the waiting staff were brilliant , helpful and knew what I could and couldn't have. Comfy bed , nice view from room . Close to shopping at Southampton west quay.
Buffet breakfast was great. Room had a decent view over the park. Easy to walk to the hotel from Southampton station, took around 15 minutes, then about 10 minutes to the city centre, maybe 20 minutes to The Dancing Man brew pub!
Very clean and comfortable hotel. Our room was very spacious and had everything we needed. Breakfast and dinner were very tasty and the service was very efficient and friendly. Would stay there again and recommend it to others
The hotel room was fine, clean, comfortable, lovely shower room, and you could control the heating temperature. the position was good with easy access off M271 and a straightforward run in to Southampton and Cruise Terminal.
- Use of Gym included in price.
- Use of communal activities such as pool table, table football and video game machine
- Cheap compared to other local properties
- Good Location for Southampton City Centre
- Clean on Arrival
I liked where the Moxy is located, close to the bus station and a minute walk to the mall. Free WIFI and very comfortable room, serviced everyday. I will definitely visit the Moxy Southampton in the future.
Apart from the location, I am sorry to say this was awful. So the location is very close to the main town centre of Southampton and also to the cruise terminals which was our reason for booking the hotel.
Excellent breakfast wide selection available.
Location was perfect for our visit to Southampton.
ALL the hotel staff we meet were very polite, warm & welcoming and helpful - really outstanding!
The apartment was exactly what we needed in the part of town we wanted to stay. It was clean, well furnished, and comfortable. Will definitely stay there again when visiting Southampton.
Pleasantly surprised after my visit to the Holiday Inn in Southampton City. The property was clean, the room was comfortable and breakfast was lovely and fresh. Good price too.
A good old-fashioned hotel with friendly helpful staff, clean rooms, nice breakfast and spa/pool attached. Lovely semi-rural location, but close enough to transport and towns.
