The facilities are well kept. Love the old Japan hotel feeling with clean, comfortable and unpretentious decorations. A car stop at entrance plus a close by car park in addition to the bigger car park. Staff at check in is professional and at breakfast are great. At dinner, food was nicely presented and it is also a pleasant experience with some selection of sake. Sofa chair in the room we booked extra for was clean and nice! Thank you.

This was a great experience - the traditional room and bedding, the meals, and the service were all fantastic. Location is a bit tricky to get to if you don't have a car, but well worth the effort.

I think there could have been a bit more choice for breakfast.
Winter closure of the open-air baths "Shirakaba-no-yu" (Late December - 28 February) Due to the accumulation of snow, the open-air bath will be closed during the winter.

The taxi driver told us there are 4 "Takamiya" in the region, which was an interesting trivia, but can get confusing.
Rooms were spacious and meals were delicious. Staff were helpful and carried our luggage to the room.

Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains. Mostly tailored to skiers and snowboarders though, with the many hills and ski facilities. But it's also a lovely place for a brief visit if you want some relaxation and onsens. We visited mainly for seeing the Zao Snow monsters and relaxing at a nice hotel. Unforuntately the Snow Monsters had already melted when we were there, and only one cablecar worked going up the mountain, so there was a huge line.
The town is cozy with a few restaurant options. We did not ski and stayed for two nights which was just the right amount of time, as there's not that much to experience in the town, other than ski, visit onsen and take the cablecar (if it's working properly)

It's good for a few days of hitting the slopes and had a surprising number for eateries compared to some of the other onsen towns.
The juhyo (snow monster) is an interesting sight (depending on the weather) especially since you will have to go right to the top of the mountain to see it.
It has a night viewing session depending on the season for the juhyo also.
And if you're driving, Yamagata town is just a short 30mins drive down the mountain and you'll have more eateries to choose from.

I stayed in Zao Onsen in mid October and had a beautiful time absorbed in the energy of the mountains and blown away by the ‘koyo’ autumn leaves 🧡 In the off season, it proves a serene escape to soak in the onsens, and take in the clean air and stunning views on various hikes. I can only imagine how much fun it would be when covered in snow!

I booked for a group of 3 families.
When I checked in they assumed that the Japanese family is the primary contact. The hotel front refused my ID and address and INSISTED that the Japanese family should be the primary contact and address.
This is unacceptable considering that I am the one booking.
It caused a lot of confusion and uncomfortable to my group.
If you do not want foreigner to book the property then why bother listing it in the booking.com?

Interesting for its hot springs one can find almost everywhere and its location in a charming mountain are. The little town itself doesn't offer much and is rather boring. Few restaurants that close early at about 3 pm and hardly any shopping facilities. Fortunately, there is at least a small convenience store. The sulphurous smell of the hot springs can be noticed all around the area.

Staying at the Christmas Rose Hotel was perfect for hot springs ( onsen ) and also close to convenience store. The owners are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Free rides to zao hp town and had coupons for the four main hot springs there. Tatami mat flooring and Japanese type hotel. Perfect for relaxing away from major city type hotels. Peaceful time memories. I have videos on youtube also about it. Highly recommended!! Zao Onsen is an amazing place.
Hands down best breakfast buffet I've had at a hotel stay. The food was fresh and gourmet with plenty of varieties. The location of the lodge was right on the ski slopes, so it was a true ski in ski out experience. The staff here work around the clock to make the stay comfortable for their guests. They even picked us up on a ski cat on the first day after getting off the gondola to get there.
The hotel offers great onsen facilities. Public baths: 1 indoor pool and 2 outdoor pools as well as 3 private facilities. The rooms are spacious and the staff is extremely polite and helpful. They offer a free shuttle bus service to and from Yamagata station which has to be reserved 3 days in advance. Wonderful dinner which was included in our room rate and very good and copious breakfast.
Excellent stay for 2 nigths in room with good view as it was snowing during our stay. Choice of 2 indooe baths, unfortunately the outdoor bath was closed on the winter. There is a free shuttle from the Bus Terminal to the hotel without which the walk is quite far in snowy condition. Bus sent is back to the terminal after check out.
The service was excellent. From front desk to dining to housekeeping. Everyone was very friendly and all smiles.
The rooms were very clean, spacious and new.
The private and foot bath were great.
I especially loved that the hotel does not have many rooms so service is personal and the baths and dining areas were not crowded
Easy access, located in centre of Zao, fun to walk around, nearby convenient store, awesome onsen (indoor and outdoor). Cute little town and somehow Halal food available. Great place to play snow with kids. Snow goods rental shop situated in front of the hotel gave my son to rent sleigh for free. Nice peoples.
- there was breakfast although we did not book it (was coffee and toast but since we did not book it…)
- free pick up and drop off from the Zao Onsen bus terminal
- quick reply to our questions beforehand
- they would have driven us to any spot in Zao Onsen and asked us every time we passed the reception
the location is in the heart of Zao onsen. 5-10 mins walk to all three slopes. the host family is friendly and considerate. dinner and breakfast are delicious. very clean rooms. one of the public onsens is right across the street. I can’t ask for a better experience. will def stay here again!
The beautiful view from your bedroom high ceiling windows, along corridors, lobby abs breakfast venue is fabulous. Outdoor sulfer onsen is really good, but you have to walk pass thru snow, (hotel provide you a snow coat, boots and umbrella for you to use). Dining and breakfast are variety.
This was a very clean and comfortable hotel, right on the ski slopes. We sent our skiis to and from Narita airport via the affordable luggage delivery. Room was huge and clean, onsen was nice, staff was very helpful and friendly. Discount ski lift tickets are available at the front desk.
I mainly booked this hotel because it was the only one that had available rooms for the period we wanted. There's nothing particularly good about it but also nothing particularly bad. The best thing about it is the location close to the ski slope.
The staff was welcoming and always willing to help despite they do not speak English, it seems to be more oriented to Japanese tourists but as a foreign, everithing went smoothly. I had 1 dinner in the restaurant and it was really tasty
The house is clean and under good maintenance. It’s just opposite to the ski resort which is very convenient. The room is not big but good enough for 3 of us. The host is super helpful and thoughtful and I’m really appreciated it.
Love the ambiance. We loved our room. Normally we make our own futon in Ryokans but here in Meitoya, they make the bed for us. We were late for dinner but the staffs were really nice they even called to remind us. Love the onsen.
The lodge is really near to the ski resort. Literally you can just walk to play ski or snowboard. Even though there is no bathroom in the property, but you can have free token to enter onsen near the property.
Fabulous !!! The hotel is splendid the dining experience is amazing one of the best food I eat in Japan. The outside onsen with the snow fall when you are in the bath is just amazing and the staff so nice !!
The staff and owners are very kind and helpful. We went during winter where there was heavy snow, and they offered pickup and drop off from bus station to hotel, to onsen, to restaurant and Zao ropeway.
